New Round of Arrests in FIFA Scandal [VIDEO]

By

Swiss authorities carried out a new round of pre-dawn arrests Thursday in connection to the U.S.-led investigation into corruption allegations within FIFA, soccer’s world governing body. More than a dozen people were expected to be charged with racketeering, money laundering, and fraud in the latest series, law-enforcement officials said. Some of the arrests occurred at the same Zurich hotel where other FIFA officials were arrested in May, and where leaders are currently gathered, The New York Times reports. The new charges were particularly aimed at South and Central American soccer leaders, officials said. FIFA President Sepp Blatter was not among those charged. The Justice Department was expected to unseal indictments as early as Thursday morning, the Times reported, citing several officials briefed on the case.
