Indians Sweep Red Sox In ALDS, Ending Big Papi’s Career

Indians Sweep Red Sox In ALDS, Ending Big Papi's CareerOn Monday night, the Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Red Sox, 4-3, at Fenway Field, completing a three-game sweep of the American League Division Series and putting an end to both the Red Sox’s World Series hopes and slugger David Ortiz’s career. Ortiz, who is retiring from the Major Leagues this seasons, ended his 20-year career with an eighth-inning walk at 9:21 p.m., heading to the dugout as Red Sox manager John Farrell brought out Marco Hernandez to pinch-run for Big Papi. “We want Papi,” the home-team crowd shouted, but Ortiz did not return to the field. Ortiz was a key part of the Red Sox team that ended the franchise’s 86-year World Series drought in 2004, then added to that record with wins in 2007 and 2013. The Indians now face the Toronto Blue Jays in the ACLS starting on Friday.
