5 Killed In New York City Helicopter Crash

Five people were killed Sunday evening when a helicopter crashed into New York City’s East River and then flipped on its side, authorities said. There were six people on board the helicopter; one was rescued by a tugboat, and five were “recovered by divers,” officials said. During a news conference, FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro announced the pilot was able to free himself from the helicopter, and of the five deceased passengers, three died at the hospital and two were pronounced dead at the scene. New York City Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill said the helicopter is owned by Liberty Helicopter Tours, and was being used for a private photo shoot.
