Democrats Moving Convention Indoors Thursday

The Democrats are going inside on Thursday, they announced Wednesday morning.

The Democratic National Convention had been scheduled to be at the Carolina Panthers’ Bank of America Stadium Thursday, when President Barack Obama accepts the party’s nomination. But Wednesday morning, the Democrats announced the event will be at Time Warner Cable Arena instead.

The Democrats cited weather as the reason.

“We have been monitoring weather forecasts closely and several reports predict thunderstorms in the area, therefore we have decided to move Thursday’s proceedings to Time Warner Cable Arena to ensure the safety and security of our delegates and convention guests,” DNCC CEO Steve Kerrigan said in a statement. “The energy and enthusiasm for our convention in Charlotte has been overwhelming and we share the disappointment of over 65,000 people who signed up for community credentials to be there with the president in person.”

The announcement comes after some doubt as to whether the Democrats were capable of filling the NFL stadium. The Associated Press reported that “Democrats have been fretting for months” about filling the stadium.
