NASA Launches Satellite To Probe Sun’s Mysteries

NASA launched a satellite late Thursday on a two-year quest to probe a little-understood region of the sun’s lower atmosphere.

The satellite is called Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph solar observatory, or IRIS, and was carried into the Earth orbit by a Pegasus rocket dropped from an airplane off the coast of California. Measuring 7 feet and weighing 400 pounds, IRIS is carrying an ultraviolet telescope that can take high-resolution images as it moves.

The goal is to study how solar material moves and gathers energy in the region.
