Turkey Allows Use of Bases Against ISIS

Turkey has agreed to let the United States use its military bases in the campaign against ISIS militants. National Security Adviser Susan Rice says the U.S. welcomes the new agreement, which includes use of the Incirlik air base in southern Turkey. Rice says the agreement includes using Turkish bases and territory “to train moderate Syrian opposition forces” and “engage in activities inside of Iraq and Syria.” Turkey has been under increasing pressure to help as Islamic State militants have moved into the strategic Syrian town of Kobani, near the Turkish border. The U.S. and its allies have been conducting airstrikes against ISIS there, but Ankara has been reluctant to get involved, and it has been criticized for letting its tank crews stand idly across the border while the town is besieged.
