Trump: Andrew Jackson ‘Would Never Have Let’ Civil War Happen

Apparently unprompted, President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Monday night to declare that former President Andrew Jackson would not have allowed the Civil War to happen. “President Andrew Jackson, who died 16 years before the Civil War started, saw it coming and was angry,” Trump tweeted. “Would never have let it happen!” Jackson owned and traded slaves on multiple plantations in Tennessee and Alabama. Trump has previously expressed admiration for Jackson, visiting his tomb and describing Jackson as beloved in the southern United States.
Trump had come under fire earlier in the day for a Sunday interview in which he praised Jackson. “I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn’t have had the Civil War,” Trump said in the Sirius XM interview. “He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart. He was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War, he said, ‘There’s no reason for this.’”
In the Sunday interview, Trump also appeared to downplay slavery as a cause of the Civil War. “People don’t realize, you know, the Civil War, if you think about it, why?” he said. “People don’t ask the question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?”
